Blackjack Rules/Strategies/Free Games

Blackjack is a game played against the dealer.
Whichever has cards that are closest to "21" wins. All face cards are counted as 10, and aces can be counted as either 1 or 11. There is also a strategy called "counting" that is used for playing blackjack, where if you can count the numbers that have appeared on the table, your probability of winning can increase.

Blackjack rules

Basic rules

Blackjack basic rulesBlackjack is a game between the player and the dealer. Whichever makes a combination of dealt cards that are closest to 21 wins.

The winner is determined by looking at the cards dealt to you and the dealer. Whichever's total value of the cards is closer to 21, is the winner. However, as soon as the value becomes 22 or over, the hand is considered a loss.

The player can choose freely to draw one more card (called a "hit"), or not (called a "stand"). The dealer will 'hit' or 'stand' according to a set rule; if the total value of the cards are 16 or lower, the dealer must hit, and if the total value is 17 or over, the dealer will stand.

If you win, you will get the same amount as your bet as winnings. If you and the dealer have the same total value of the cards, the result is called a "push", and your bet will be returned to you.

Blackjack lingo and options

There are not that many specialized terms used in Blackjack. Just remember the following words and you will have no problems in starting to play.

Hit

If the total value of your cards is low, you can choose to draw one more card. This is called a "hit". As long as the total value does not exceed 21, you can choose to hit as many times as you want.

Stand (or Stay)

If you feel that you want to stop with the cards you have now, you can choose to "stand" which means, you don't want to draw any more cards. The player can stand at any time.

Blackjack

BlackjackIf the first two cards drawn consists of a 10 or a face card, and an ace, this is called a "blackjack", and you will receive 1.5 times the amount of your bet as winnings (so if you bet $10, you will receive $25 back). However, if the dealer also has a blackjack, the result will be a tie.

The above are the basics of what you need to know about Blackjack!

Below are some options you can choose to exercise during the game.

Double Down (or Double)

After receiving your first two cards, you can double your bet amount and choose to "double down", which is an annoucement to draw only one more card.

Blackjack Double DownFor example, if your first two cards are as on the right, your total is 11.

If your next card is a 10 or a face card (J, Q, or K), then your total will be 21. If you feel confident in drawing these cards, you can double down and double your bet.

Split

If you get two of the same numbered cards, you can choose to "split", meaning separating the cards to play each card as a separate hand. Since you are betting on each split hand, so you need to double your bet amount.

Blackjack splitFor example, if your cards are as on the right, you can do a "split".

Blackjack splitIf your second cards are as on the right, your hand on the left side is a total of 18. You can choose to 'stand'.
Your hand on the right side is a total of 15. You can choose to 'hit'.

Blackjack splitNow the hand you chose to hit, is now 21! If the dealer's cards are totaled at 17 or under (or exceeded 21), then both of your hands have won!

Insurance

If you place an "insurance", you can receive your bet amount back when the dealer gets a blackjack. An insurance can be placed when the first card drawn by the dealer is an ace.

InsuranceWhen the first card drawn by the dealer is an ace, you will be asked if you want to place an insurance. If you think the dealer will draw a 10 or a face card on the second card, you can place an insurance.

To place an insurance, you need to place half of the amount of your bet. For example, if you have bet $10, then the insurance will be $5.

a) If the dealer's second card was a 10 or a face card...

Insurance BlackjackThe dealer has a balck jack, which means, your $10 bet will be taken away, but your $5 will be doubled to $10 and returned to you.

b) If the dealer's second card was not a 10 or a face card...

Insurance Blackjack

Your insurance of $5 will be taken away. The game will continue as normal, and you will play against the dealer with your hand.

It's easy! How to play Blackjack wisely

The simplest strategy for Blackjack is to play just like the dealer.

BlackjackIf your first two cards are as on the right, your total is 13.

Since this is under 17, choose to 'hit'. Your third card is a 5.

BlackjackNow your total is 18.

Since your total is now over 17, choose to 'stay'.

Just this can make a difference in your play, especially if you are going to play for a long time.

Blackjack The dangerous "Counting" strategy

There is a strategy method for Blackjack called "Counting". Here I will explain a little bit about the strategy.

Blackjack strategy, the "Counting" thinking method

Blackjack is a game between the player and dealer, but under certain circumstance, the dealer is more likely to bust (teh total value of the dealer's hand is over 22) and lose. The strategy of "Counting" is to spot this circumstance and to increase your bet amount when you have the advantage.

The player and dealer both draw cards to reach closer to 21. The player may choose freely to hit or stand. But, the dealer can only hit or stand according to certain rules; if the total value of the cards are 16 or lower, the dealer must hit, and if the total value is 17 or over, the dealer will stand. Take advantage of this difference.

Here is an example.

@@@@Player's card K and 6 -> Total 16

@@@@Dealer's card K and 6 -> Total 16

Let's presume that all of the remaining cards in the pile to draw from are 10 or face cards (all cards that are counted as 10). Therefore, if any card you draw will be counted as 10 and will result in a bust (meaning you will exceed 21 and lose). Of course you do not want to draw in such a circumstance.

But, the dealer must draw according to the rules.

Predict the next card

In reality, no one can be for sure what the next card will be. However, you can predict the next card according to the cards already on the table.

Blackjack is played with a few decks of cards. The cards decrease as you play, and is shuffled when the cards remaining reach approximately one third. There are 13 kinds of cards (from ace to king), in a deck of cards, and there are 4 kinds of cards counted as 10, which are 10, J, Q, and K. This equals 4 out of 13 cards (or 30.8%).

As you continue to play, and the smaller numbers (2-7) appear on the table, more and more cards counted as 10 remain in the cards to draw from. As this happens, the dealer is more likely to bust. By betting more in this circumstance, the advantage is on the player, and the expectancy of winnings becomes more than 100%, meaning the more you play, the more likely you are to win.

A dangerous technique for the house

In a real casino, if you are spotted counting the cards that have been dealt, you can be lead out of the casino.

How about at an online casino?

In an online casino, no one can know if a player is counting with a paper and pencil as they play. Some casinos have rules to restrict counting, but in reality, it is very difficult to find out if a player is counting.

Counting Systems

So, at what count shall you bet how much? Here, we introduce some of the basic systems used for counting. These are detailed explanations that could be a bit difficult for beginner players. You can start off by picking one that you think you can do, and try it out. As you get used to it, you can move on to the other methods.

Try playing on the live dealer blackjack game. You see when the cards are being shuffled, and it feels like playing in a real casino.

Live dealer games can only be played in the real money mode.
